About Asal Chat
Asal Chat is a free chat community for Persian speakers around the world. This website is its English-language entrance and its library of guides.
What Asal Chat is
"Asal" (عسل) is the Persian word for honey. Asal Chat is a set of online chat rooms where people talk in public rooms and private conversations, by text, voice message and voice or video call. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. Entering is free, either as a guest with a nickname or as a member with a free account.
The community has been online for 16 years. Many of its members visit every day, and many of them live far from the places where they grew up.
Who it is for
- Persian speakers living abroad in Europe, North America, Australia and elsewhere, who want to speak their own language at the end of the day.
- People who grew up outside Iran or Afghanistan and want to keep, or recover, the language of their family.
- Learners of Persian looking for real conversation with patient native speakers.
- Anyone curious about Persian language and culture. You are welcome to write in English.

How the rooms are kept friendly
A chat room is only as pleasant as the behaviour in it. Asal Chat has a short list of rules, published on the rules page, and a team of moderators who apply them. Insults, harassment, sexual content in public rooms, advertising and the sharing of other people's personal details are not allowed.
Every user can block another user in a private conversation and can report a message or a user to the moderators. Reports sent through the form on the first page go directly to the site management. Depending on how serious a violation is, an account may be warned, muted, removed or permanently banned. There is no tolerance at all for any sexual approach to minors; our child safety standards describe this in detail.
About the articles
The guides on this site are written by the Asal Chat team. They grow out of the questions that come up in the rooms: how to stay safe, how to write Persian on a foreign keyboard, what a phrase means, how a tradition is kept far from home. We try to be practical and accurate, and to say so when customs or opinions differ.
If you find a mistake, or would like to suggest a subject, please tell us. Corrections are made as soon as they are confirmed.
How the service is paid for
Asal Chat is free to use. To help cover the cost of running it, this website may show advertisements provided by Google. Advertising does not influence what we write or how the rooms are moderated, and we do not sell users' personal information. The privacy policy explains what data is collected and how you can control personalised ads.
